What does art have to do with therapy?

Sometimes we feel stuck in life. Whether we are followed by mental health issues, discrimination, stigma, systemic and economic barriers, family problems, relationship difficulties, or not feeling totally fulfilled, we all feel weighed down at moments.

That’s the great thing about art: it’s the opposite of stuck. Instead of looping problems over and over and over (sigh) in our head, the arts can help shift our perspective so that we can work through obstacles creatively. This translates into everyday life, too. It can make us more confident, grounded, open, connected and lighter in the face of challenges. The arts can open opportunities so that we feel empowered to make positive change in our lives and the world.

Do I have to do ‘art’ or be an ‘artist’?

Not at all! There are many ways to be creative, and no “right” way to do art. If you don’t like one kind of art, we will play, talk, and find what kind of expression feels best for you. My background is in expressive arts therapy and I also use a variety of talk therapy and embodiment-based modalities, so you can choose what fits.

Why go to therapy?

You don’t need to have a “reason”, or you could come with a specific goal. Maybe you’re experiencing a tough situation, or feeling “blah” and unfulfilled. Therapy is about carving out a space to explore your strengths in the face of adversity. It can be transformative having a chance to express yourself without judgements or expectations (which, let’s be honest, we all deserve). Therapy can help you learn how to have better relationships with others, improve your self-esteem, work through problems, vent, change what you want to change, and be the best version of yourself (whatever that means to you!)

How does this work?

In our first session, we’ll get to know each other, and figure out what you’d like our space to look like. It’s up to you what role you need me to play. We’ll take it one step at a time.

You are in charge of how the sessions look - I’ll be there to support you, guide you when you need, or take a back seat and listen. Some sessions we may talk the whole time, and many we will incorporate whatever art forms you like best, or new ones you want to explore.

“Art” can include visual arts, music, drama, dance, writing, clowning, mindfulness, storytelling, digital medias, baking, makeup art, fashion, photography, drag, video games (I love animal crossing!), table-top roleplaying games, ritual, tarot cards, play, and any type of creativity that resonates with you!

Don’t have any art experience? This is for you! It’s not about being “good”: it’s about experimenting, being messy, and embracing imperfection. Everyone is an artist (really).

How much does it cost?

My rate for an hour long expressive arts therapy session is $120 + GST. There is an office fee of $10 for in-person sessions. If it is not financially accessible for you, I offer sliding scale spots ($60-$100). Expressive arts therapy is not covered by insurance.

Who is eligible?

I offer therapy virtually and in-person in Toronto. It doesn’t matter where you live or who you are, you are eligible. Kids, adults, youth, and seniors are all welcome. I’ve worked with a wide range of people from diverse walks of life. If you are under the age of 14, you will need your guardian’s permission, but our sessions remain confidential. If you’re unsure if this therapy is for you, please email me.

Do you offer group therapy?

Yes! Check out current group therapy offerings here.

Is it online?

It’s your choice whether you’d like to meet online, on the phone, or in-person at my Toronto studio—or a hybrid. I also offer outdoor therapy and home visits.
